Escritor estadounidense. Creció en la costa este de Maryland, escenario de gran parte de su obra, y desde 1953 ha enseñado principalmente en la Universidad de Johns Hopkins. Aparte de los relatos experimentales de su libro de cuentos Perdido en la casa encantada (1968), sus obras más conocidas son las novelas La ópera flotante (1956), Fin del camino (1958), El plantador de tabaco (1960), Giles Goat-Boy [Giles, el cabrerito] (1966) y la compilación The Tidewater Tales [Cuentos costeros] (1987). La mayoría estos relatos parodian y juegan con las formas narrativas tradicionales, combinando la profundidad filosófica con una sátira mordaz y un humor irreverente y, en ocasiones, subido de tono. En 2001 publicó la novela experimental Coming Soon!!!: A Narrative [¡¡Pronto!!: Una novela], que no fue bien recibida por la crítica.
